All work has been completed as scheduled and appears to be working as expected.  A few small fine-tuning tasks remain to be completed today and tomorrow that generally should not cause any additional service impacts.  As a reminder please first follow the instructions below if you have issues with your office computer.

Information and Technology Services has scheduled an update to the campus network that will take place on December 26th.  We expect this change to have minimal impact on any devices or services; however, there are a few things that we would like you to be aware of regarding this change.
  • For those of you that plan to physically return to campus when the break is over and don’t connect to your office computer using Remote Desktop, we ask that you turn off your computer as you leave campus for the holidays.  This will further reduce the possibility of any network disruption with your devices and have the added benefit of power savings when these systems are not in use.
  • For those individuals that connect to their office computer using Remote Desktop, you can leave your office computer turned on, but you will need to make a minor change to the name of the system you enter when connecting.  After Dec. 26th, you will need to append clients.plu.edu to the name of the system when establishing a connection. An example would be CATS18000.clients.plu.edu.
If you experience any problems getting a connection with your on-campus computer after the 26th, please first try restarting your computer to see if it resolves the issue.  If you are having difficulty connecting to your office computer from off campus and need someone to restart it for you, please contact the Help Desk by calling 253-535-7525 or by putting in a request at https://helpdesk.plu.edu.  I&TS Staff will be monitoring any voicemail messages that come in related to this issue during normal business hours, beginning Monday, December 28th.  We will respond to network related requests regarding this change as quickly as we can during this time.

PLU has multiple ISP connections and has designed our connectivity to utilize all links whenever possible.  During this maintenance, our Internet service will be switched to our secondary ISP for all traffic. However, during the transition periods users may experience disruption to their connections.

Current Status: Resolved

Description: A faulty firmware upgrade process from our network vendor caused the newly deployed network equipment in 3 building (Hauge, Xavier, & Morken) to go offline around 1:00PM this afternoon.  After reaching the vendor's tech support and identifying the problem and resolution I&TS began the process of restoring service around 2:45PM.  Unfortunately the restoration process requires manual configuration changes on each wireless access point in the new network which slows the resolution process, but full restoration is anticipated before 5:00 PM.

*Completion Update*
The initial troubleshooting work was completed around 9:00 AM Friday morning and appeared to be successful after significant testing.  Unfortunately, around mid-afternoon I&TS began receiving reports of issues from some users having difficulty accessing campus services including the PLU web page and Sakai.  After additional testing and support from our vendor, a second configuration error was identified that was resulting in connection problems for a subset of users trying to connect to campus.  This additional issue was resolved and, after rigorous further testing, our Internet and VPN services appear to be stable and restored to full capability.

*Original Post*
In order to improve service, we are going to conduct some troubleshooting of the Internet connections in conjunction with our support vendors during the day on Friday.  The work will likely cause at least intermittent disruption to Internet & VPN connections, but every effort to minimize the impact will be made.  Recent information from our equipment vendor suggests we may have a path to resolution with minimal disruption, but we are reserving the entire maintenance window in order to allow for extensive and intrusive testing if necessary. We apologize for the disruption and very much appreciate everyone's understanding as we work to improve the overall reliability and capacity of our campus Internet service.

The issues causing a variety of connectivity issues to & from the campus network appear to be resolved at this time.  The root cause is still being investigated, but appears to be related to routing Internet connection routing issues.  Further work to resolve these issues and avoid future problems may be necessary in the next few days.

Beginning at approximately 9:15am, I&TS began receiving notification of general network disruptions affecting the ability to connect to campus resources.  We are aware of the issue and actively working on a resolution.  More information will be posted here when it is available.

9:55 pm We've completed the scheduled maintenance of Netstor.  It involved implementing the latest version of Windows Server for Netstor.  Unfortunately, that update resulted in the loss of existing drive mappings to Netstor folders for some users.  Those users will need to recreate their mappings.  You can pursue the normal help channels if you need help recreating your mappings.

9:00 pm The maintenance tasks are taking longer than necessary.  The system will continue to be offline until all work is completed.  We will update again no later than 10:00 pm.
