Nevertheless, emails sent from Sakai and these other services between 10pm last night and 10am this morning will likely not have reached recipients. Therefore, anyone who has sent email notifications via these services during this period may want to resend them.

Our telephone carrier notified us that this problem should be resolved and our testing confirms this is the case.  No further issues are anticipated and no further action is required.

**Original**
Information & Technology Services began receiving reports of issues making outbound long distance telephone calls first thing this morning.  Upon contacting our primary telephone carrier we were informed they are having issues resulting from a power outage at one of the central offices.  This outage is causing issues with nearly all outbound long distance calls (toll free appears unaffected), though random calling attempts appear to go through.

At this time it appears inbound calls of all types are unaffected by this issue.  Our carrier does not have an ETA for restoration of service, but we will continue to monitor the issue and relay their status updates whenever available.

Workarounds: Using a cell phone to make calls or asking the other party to call into campus.

Due to a security issue Information & Technology Services found it necessary to take the server responsible for the community.plu.edu web pages offline to protect critical PLU resources.  For websites accessed through community.plu.edu (also known previously as www.plu.edu/~ ), the server providing hosting and web page redirection services will not be available until further notice.  We are working to restore this service as soon as possible.

Service(s) Impacted: community.plu.edu based web sites

Workarounds: For web sites hosted on the Google Sites portion of this service, they can still be access and managed through https://sites.google.com/a/plu.edu  All other sites hosted through the on-campus server (aka allspice.plu.edu), will not be accessible until service restoration is complete.

Estimated Time to Resolution or Next Update: For user facing services on this platform resolution should be complete now.  Final configuration testing & verification is underway and should be complete before the end of the week.  No impact on end-users is anticipated with the remaining work.

WHAT:  Sakai Rich-Text Editor Upgrade on Aug. 8, 2015

WHEN:  08/08/2015  Duration:  7:00AM - 7:30AM PDT

Description:  On Saturday, August 8, 2015, Sakai will be out of service from 7:00AM to 7:30AM PDT in order to upgrade the CKEditor, the rich-text editor in Sakai. The CKEditor is embedded within many Sakai tools including Lessons, Mailtool, Assignments, Announcements, etc.

As a result of this upgrade, the new CKEditor will have a new look-and-feel, most noticeably with updated tool icons. However, the current ordering of the CKEditor’s buttons and drop-down menus will remain the same. Furthermore, many of the quirks users experience with this editor will be resolved as a result of this upgrade.

The system has moved to a strength based system that reduces the number of rules and requirements for the password and interactively calculates its strength as it is typed. The stronger the password, the longer you are able to use it before it expires. The security questions page has also been updated and now provides some options for randomizing the built-in questions or creating a unique question on your own.

Description: *Update*  Issues related to this incident appear to have been resolved by our ISP over the weekend.

Original Message:
An Internet routing misconfiguration in SouthEast Asia is causing a cascading set of routing problems across some of the largest global Internet carriers.  This problem is affecting a portion of the Internet service PLU uses as well as causing interference with access to campus resources from many remote locations including home ISPs and some mobile carriers.

ISPs around the world are working to flush the misconfiguration out of their systems and hope to have the problem resolved ASAP.  Unfortunately, no specific ETA for resolution can be provided at this time due to the massive scope of the impact.

Please note that due to how modern telephone services are handled today, there is a remote chance that issues with Internet connectivity could cause intermittent issues with telephone calls as well.  However, we do not currently have any reports of this issue affecting PLU telephone services.

Description:  On Saturday, May 30, 2015, Sakai will be out of service from 7:00am to 8:00am PDT for maintenance. During this time the Sakai Support Team will upgrade the integration between Sakai and the Turnitin Originality Checking service. The currently implemented integration would otherwise reach its end-of-life later this year.

Warning:  As a result of this change, instructors will likely not be able to access Turnitin Originality Reports (and GradeMark annotations, rubrics, etc.) that were generated before this upgrade. Thus, instructors who want to preserve any of these reports will likely want to download PDF copies before May 30. For details see the instructions on how to download each Originality Report.

Also, this upgrade will apply fixes to GradeMark, a grading tool provided by Turnitin that instructors can use on student assignments submitted through Sakai Assignments and Turnitin. For a quick introduction to GradeMark, please refer to "Exploring GradeMark for Sakai Turnitin Assignments".

At 7:22 am, Google posted a notice on their status blog stating that they are receiving reports of issues with IMAP connections for Gmail. This only affects users attempting to access their email through a mail application that uses an IMAP connection, such as Thunderbird, Mail.app, or phone email applications. It does not currently affect users accessing through a web-browser.

Description: The campus wireless network will undergo a brief disruption this morning (3/12/2015) to allow for a maintenance upgrade. This upgrade will resolve an issue with some users getting limited Internet connectivity in their dorm rooms.

Resolution: Google has resolved the issue and the syncing should be working once more. If you continue to have difficulty setting up gmail on your phone, please stop by the Help Desk, located on the first floor of the Library, or call 253-535-7525.

Original issue: Our Systems Team was notified by Google this morning of an issue which is affecting the synchronization of new passwords and accounts. In brief, users will experience problems using their ePass password in the following two scenarios:
  • Newly Made PLU Gmail accounts
  • Syncing gmail accounts using email applications on phones (e.g., mail.app on iOS, Gmail App on Android, etc)
This does not affect users attempting to access Gmail through a web-browser by going to mail.g.plu.edu.
